Fishing in the White Mountains: Best Spots Near Our Pinetop-Lakeside Cabins

Arizona isn't the first state that comes to mind when you think about fishing. But if you've never cast a line in the White Mountains, you're missing one of the best-kept fishing destinations in the Southwest. The Pinetop-Lakeside area sits at 7,000 feet in the world's largest ponderosa pine forest, surrounded by cold, clear lakes and streams stocked regularly by Arizona Game and Fish. Trout fishing in the White Mountains is genuinely good, and the drive from Phoenix or Tucson is about three hours.

Our four vacation rental cabins in Pinetop-Lakeside put you right in the middle of it. You're minutes from some of the most productive fishing spots in Arizona, with a full kitchen to cook your catch, a deck to clean gear, and enough space for the whole fishing crew.

White Mountain Fishing: What You're Getting Into

The White Mountains region of Arizona is home to dozens of lakes, reservoirs, and streams managed specifically for fishing. Arizona Game and Fish stocks rainbow trout, brown trout, and brook trout throughout the season, and the elevation keeps water temperatures cold enough to hold fish year-round. Whether you're a fly fishing purist working a stream or a family dropping lines off a dock, there's water for you within a short drive of Pinetop-Lakeside.

You'll need a valid Arizona fishing license, available online through Arizona Game and Fish or at local sporting goods stores in Pinetop. Trout stamps are required for trout fishing. Limits and regulations vary by water body, so check the current AZGFD rules before you go.

Nearby Fishing Spots Worth the Drive

Woodland Lake Park

Less than two miles from our properties, Woodland Lake is the easiest fishing stop in the area. It's stocked regularly with rainbow trout and is a great first stop for kids or anyone who wants a relaxed morning without a long drive. The paved 2.5-mile loop around the lake makes it easy to find a good spot, and there are picnic tables and restrooms on site. Bring a folding chair and a simple spinning rod and you'll do fine here.

Pinetop Lakes

A short drive from our cabins, the Pinetop Lakes area includes several small lakes that hold trout and bass. These are quieter waters with less boat traffic, which makes them good for float tubes and kayak fishing. The surrounding pines and the lack of crowds make for a genuinely pleasant morning on the water.

Show Low Lake

About 15 minutes north of Pinetop, Show Low Lake is one of the most popular fishing destinations in the White Mountains. It holds largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, and rainbow trout. There's a boat ramp, a small marina, and rental boats available on site. If you want to spend a full day on the water with a proper boat, this is the spot.

Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area

Just outside Show Low, Fool Hollow Lake is an Arizona State Park with excellent trout and bass fishing. It's well maintained, has a campground and boat launch, and is stocked consistently through the season. The setting is classic White Mountains: pines right down to the water, quiet mornings, and good bird watching while you wait for a bite.

Big Lake

If you're willing to drive about 45 minutes south of Pinetop into the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, Big Lake is one of the finest trout fisheries in Arizona. It sits at 9,000 feet and holds rainbow, brown, brook, and cutthroat trout. Fly fishing here is excellent, especially in the early morning. The lake is remote enough that it never feels crowded, and the scenery is hard to beat anywhere in the state.

Black River

The Black River runs through the Fort Apache Indian Reservation and the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, and it's one of the best fly fishing streams in Arizona. Brown and rainbow trout hold in the deeper pools, and the river has enough character to keep experienced anglers interested all day. You'll need a White Mountain Apache Tribe recreation permit for the reservation sections. Worth every penny.

Where to Get Gear and Licenses in Pinetop

You don't need to pack everything from home. Pinetop has a handful of sporting goods stores and bait shops where you can pick up tackle, licenses, trout stamps, and local knowledge. The staff at these shops know which lakes are fishing well right now, what the trout are hitting, and whether the road to Big Lake is passable. Stop in before you head out and ask. It's worth the five minutes.

Arizona fishing licenses are also available online at azgfd.com. Buy yours before you leave home so you're not scrambling the morning of your first cast.

Our Pinetop-Lakeside Vacation Rentals: The Right Base for a Fishing Trip

A good fishing trip needs a good home base. You want somewhere to store gear, clean fish, cook a proper meal, and sleep well before an early morning on the water. Our four properties in Pinetop-Lakeside do all of that, and they're sized for every kind of fishing group.

Cozy Cottage Lakeside exterior at dusk with string lights and patio

Cozy Cottage Lakeside — 2 bed / 2 bath / sleeps 6

A solid choice for a couple of fishing buddies or a small family. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms means nobody's waiting around. Woodland Lake is less than two miles away.

Cozy Cub Log Cabin — 2 bed / 1 bath / sleeps 5

The smallest of our properties and the most cabin-like. Real log construction, a full kitchen, and a cozy living room that feels right after a long day on the water. Good for a couple, a solo angler who wants extra space, or a small family with young kids fishing Woodland Lake for the first time. It's priced well and doesn't waste space.

Hillside Hangout elevated deck with fire pit table at sunset through the pines

Hillside Hangout — 3 bed / 2 bath / sleeps 8

Three bedrooms and an elevated deck with a fire pit table overlooking the pines. This one works well for a group of four to six anglers who want their own rooms and a proper place to sit after dinner. The deck is where the fish stories happen. Plenty of room for gear, coolers, and rods without anyone tripping over each other.

The Perfect Pair (Hillside Hangout + Cozy Cottage) — 5 bed / 4 bath / sleeps 14

Book both properties together and you've got the whole compound: 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and space for up to 14 guests across two adjacent cabins with a shared yard. This is the one for a large fishing group, two families going in together, or a multi-generational trip where grandpa and the grandkids all want to fish different water. Everyone gets their own space, and the shared yard is perfect for an evening cookout after a day on the lake.
