Three two-bedroom stays in Garabito, near Jacó

Gray-sand Playa Jacó in Garabito, Costa Rica, with rainforest-covered hills rising behind the beach town

If you want two bedrooms in Garabito, the canton on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast that contains Jacó and Playa Herradura, we have three to show you, and they are not variations on the same thing. Condo Jadura is a sixth-floor condo in the Viva Jacó tower, sleeping five. Cabina Plumeria and Cabina Bamboo is two separate garden cabinas booked together, also sleeping five. Zen Den and Rose Room is two private bedrooms inside the main house at Zenergy Casa & Cabinas, sleeping four.

Same bedroom count, three genuinely different ways to spend a week here. The choice is really about how much of the building you want to yourself, and whether you'd rather walk to dinner or swim in a garden.

The quick comparison

  • Condo Jadura: condo, 2 bedrooms, sleeps 5. Sixth floor of the Viva Jacó tower, views over rainforest hills and the pool deck. One bathroom. Elevator, free parking, a gym and coworking office in the building, three pools, two BBQ areas, billiards and foosball. Pet-friendly.

  • Cabina Plumeria and Cabina Bamboo: two self-contained cabinas on a shared garden property, 2 bedrooms, sleeps 5, two bathrooms. Queen bed plus a day-bed in one, a queen studio with ensuite in the other. Travel Crib available. Pet-friendly.

  • Zen Den and Rose Room: two bedrooms in the main house at Zenergy Casa & Cabinas, sleeps 4. Each room locks, each has a desk and a reading nook, and the two rooms share a bathroom between them. The kitchen and pool are shared with the wider house.

The one in the middle of Jacó

Condo Jadura puts you in town. The building sits in Jacó's centre, with cafés, restaurants and shops along the strip: Sepalo, Ambrosia Cafe, Very Italian Pizza and Vivace are all within walking distance of the front door, and the beach is a short stroll. That matters more than it sounds. Jacó's gray sand runs more or less a block behind the main road, so you can swim before breakfast and eat dinner without touching a car.

Inside, it's a compact two-bedroom with one bathroom, air conditioning in every room, a kitchen stocked down to the spices and coffee, and a desk and chair that someone clearly chose for working rather than for decoration. There's a Roku TV in the living room and in both bedrooms, and room-darkening curtains, which is the detail that decides whether a child naps through a bright Pacific afternoon.

The building does a lot of the work. Three pools, split between children, adults and a lap pool. A rancho you can borrow for a gathering, two barbecue areas, a gym, a coworking office, a dog park, a playground, billiards and foosball, and security around the clock. The sixth-floor balcony looks over the pool deck, so if half your group is swimming and half is reading, nobody disappears.

One bathroom for five people is the honest constraint. Two couples will feel it in the morning; a family with small children won't. It's also pet-friendly, and the building has a dog park, which is not a combination you find often in a tower.

Two cabinas in a garden

Cabina Plumeria and Cabina Bamboo is the choice for people who want a door of their own. You're booking two separate cabinas on the Zenergy Casa & Cabinas grounds: one with a queen bed, a day-bed and its own bathroom, the other a queen studio with an ensuite. Two bathrooms for five people, which is the inverse of the Condo Jadura arithmetic.

The appeal is the walk between them. Tropical planting, a large pool, a shady gazebo for the hours when nobody wants direct sun. Two couples travelling together get real separation here without splitting into two bookings on opposite sides of town, and a small family gets a second room that isn't through a shared wall. There's a crib, so an infant doesn't dictate the whole plan.

It's a shared property, and that's the point rather than the compromise. The other cabina and the main house guest rooms are occupied, there's an onsite team, and the pool is a place where people say hello. If the idea of that makes you tense, book the tower instead.

Both cabinas have air conditioning, a kitchen, a workspace and laundry, and the property is pet-friendly. Minutes from the beach, with the main house kitchen and barbecue area for the nights you'd rather cook than drive.

Two rooms in a house, which is a different proposition

Zen Den and Rose Room is the only one of the three that isn't a self-contained home, and we'd rather you knew that now than on arrival. You're taking two bedrooms inside the main house at Zenergy Casa & Cabinas. Rose Room has a queen, a reading nook and a well-lit desk. Zen Den is smaller and earthier, with a full bed and a writing desk. Each room locks, each has room-darkening shades and its own air conditioning, and the bathroom between them is shared by those two rooms alone.

The kitchen is shared with the house, fully equipped, and the pool and gazebo are common ground. For four people who are comfortable with that, it's a soft landing: a desk in each room, Wi-Fi, laundry, parking, and the same onsite team. Two remote workers and two travellers on holiday can coexist here without either side resenting the other, because nobody is working at the dining table.

It won't suit anyone who wants a front door that closes behind their whole party. Pets aren't part of this one.

How to pick between them

Start with where you want to be when you're not in the house. Jacó's strip, with the shops, restaurants and nightlife, is a walk from Condo Jadura's lobby. The Zenergy properties sit in a garden setting a few minutes from the beach, which is quieter and asks you to drive to dinner more often. Both work; they produce different weeks.

Then count bathrooms rather than bedrooms. Five people and one bathroom is fine for a family and testing for two couples. The cabinas give you two bathrooms and two front doors for the same headcount. Zen Den and Rose Room give four people one shared bathroom and no kitchen of their own.

Then the dog. Condo Jadura and the cabinas are pet-friendly; the main-house rooms aren't. Confirm the particulars with us before you book, because we handle those conversations ourselves rather than through a platform.

Remote workers have an easy time of it: all three list a dedicated workspace and Wi-Fi, and Condo Jadura adds the building's coworking office and gym if you'd rather not take calls from the sofa.

What's around, once you've chosen

Playa Herradura sits about fifteen minutes up the coast from Jacó, a sheltered cove with calmer water than Jacó's beach break, a few restaurants and parking right by the sand. Families with small swimmers tend to prefer it. Los Sueños Marina is on the same bay, a few minutes from Jacó and the hub of the sportfishing scene on this coast, with restaurants in its marina village and boats running out to Tortuga Island, about three quarters of an hour away by water.

Inland, Carara National Park is roughly half an hour north, at the seam where the drier forests of the north meet the rainforest of the south. Scarlet macaws cross the sky around it, and guests regularly see them from the balconies here without going anywhere. Manuel Antonio is the other obvious day trip, south along the coast road; allow around an hour and a half and more if the traffic conspires, which it does.

From Juan Santamaría airport outside San José, the run down Highway 27 and along the coast takes the best part of two hours on a weekday afternoon, less when the road is clear. Plan the first night as an arrival night and nothing more.
