A 3-bedroom Pinetop cabin for a week of lake fishing

Woodland Lake in Woodland Lake Park, Pinetop-Lakeside, Arizona, ringed by ponderosa pines on a summer morning

The short answer: Hillside Hangout is our three-bedroom cabin in Pinetop, two baths, sleeps eight, pet friendly, and it sits in a quiet pocket of neighborhood a short walk from Woodland Lake Park. If your group is bigger than eight, the same house pairs with the cottage across the street under one booking, and that arrangement is covered further down.

Woodland Lake is the reason most fishing trips land in this town rather than Show Low. It's a small lake inside a park, stocked with rainbow trout and holding largemouth bass and channel catfish, and it draws down during irrigation season, so late summer sees it shrink from its full footprint. Rainbow Lake, just outside the town line alongside Highway 260, is the bigger water and the one people put small boats, kayaks and paddleboards on when conditions allow. Show Low Lake and Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area sit a short drive north, Fool Hollow inside about twenty minutes of town.

What Hillside Hangout actually gives an angler

It's a 1,200 square foot cabin on a hillside, and the deck is the part people remember: elevated, looking into the pines, with a six-seat fire pit table that becomes the dining room once the sun drops. Deer, squirrels and bluejays work the lot most days, which is worth knowing if you have a child who will sit still for twenty minutes to watch something.

The practical side matters more on a fishing week than the view does. Every bedroom has its own A/C, heater and fan, so the person who wants to sleep cold and the person who doesn't can stop negotiating. There's a washer and dryer, which is the amenity you care about on day three when everything smells of lake and campfire. The kitchen is set up to actually cook in, down to spices on the shelf, and there's a BBQ area for anything you'd rather not pan-fry indoors. Wi-Fi throughout, a dedicated workspace if someone is stealing a Friday, a sound system, and board games and books for the afternoon the monsoon arrives and parks over the White Mountains.

Families travelling with the youngest kids should know there's a crib and a high chair here, plus children's dinnerware. That's three things you don't have to fit in the truck alongside the rods.

Two cars fit in the uncovered parking right in front of the house, with more off-street space if you need it. The whole house and lot are yours, and dogs are welcome.

When eight beds isn't enough: the pair across the street

Hillside Hangout and Cozy Cottage is not a five-bedroom house. It's two homes directly across the street from one another, booked together: the same three-bedroom Hillside Hangout, plus Cozy Cottage Lakeside, 900 square feet, two bedrooms and two baths, sleeping six. Together that's five bedrooms, four baths and room for fourteen, with parking for four or five vehicles depending on size, which is the real constraint when two families turn up with a boat trailer between them.

The arrangement suits two families or an extended group who want to eat together and then go to separate houses at nine o'clock. The cottage has a front yard that feels private and works for standing around a grill; the Hillside's deck handles the evening. Both are steep sites with stairs, so anyone with mobility concerns should look elsewhere in town.

Either home also books on its own. If you're four adults fishing and nobody needs a third bedroom, the cottage alone does the job.

Choosing between them

  • Six to eight people, one roof, one kitchen: Hillside Hangout on its own. Three bedrooms, each climate-controlled independently.
  • Nine to fourteen, two households: the paired booking. Four bathrooms is the number that makes a dawn start on the water survivable.
  • A quiet two-bedroom base: Cozy Cottage Lakeside, or the log cabin option below.
  • Travelling with a dog: both the three-bedroom and the paired booking welcome pets.

There's also Cozy Cub Log Cabin, a 600 square foot real log cabin from the 1960s with two bedrooms, one bathroom and a large deck under tall pines. It sleeps five and it isn't the three-bedroom you asked for, but if your group is small and you'd rather the cabin felt like a cabin, it's the one to look at.

How the week tends to go

People fish Woodland Lake early because it's the closest water to a walkable morning and the park is pleasant even when the fish aren't cooperating. Rainbow Lake gets the kayak and paddleboard days. Fool Hollow, up past Show Low, is the one worth the drive when you want a change of shoreline and a state park's facilities, and it's a straightforward run on 260 then north.

Afternoons in July and August belong to the weather. Storms build over the Mogollon Rim and drop fast, which is why the deck, the fire pit table and a stocked kitchen end up carrying more of the trip than anyone plans for. Come in winter and the calculation changes entirely: the same houses, the same heating, Sunrise Park Resort within reach for skiing, and no irrigation drawdown to think about.

Booking

We host and manage these homes ourselves, which means the person answering your text about whether the trailer will fit in the driveway is the person who knows the driveway. Book direct through the site, and tell us your dates and your group size: if the three-bedroom is taken for your week, the pairing across the street often isn't.

Phoenix is around three and a half hours away by way of Payson on Highway 87. From Tucson, figure on about four.
