One-bedroom stays in Garabito for a fishing trip

Sportfishing boats moored at Los Sueños Marina in Playa Herradura, Garabito, Costa Rica, early morning

Yes, there are one-bedroom options in Garabito, and the ones we manage are small by design: couples' rooms, not scaled-down family condos. If you're pairing an offshore day out of Herradura with a quiet place to sleep, start with Zen Den, one bedroom, sleeps two, inside the main house at Zenergy Casa & Cabinas. Then look at Sunflower Suite and Rose Room, both also one bedroom for two, and Cabina Plumeria, a one-bedroom cabina with a queen and a day-bed that sleeps three.

Zen Den, and what a fishing couple actually uses

Zen Den is a calm, stylish room in the main house with a full matrimonial bed, a writing desk and a reading nook. The bathroom is shared with the Rose Room next door, which is the single fact worth deciding on before you book: if you want a bathroom nobody else touches, the Sunflower Suite has a private ensuite with custom Costa Rican artwork, and a king bed, which matters more than it sounds like it does after a day braced against a fighting chair.

The amenities that earn their keep on a fishing trip are unglamorous. Air conditioning, because you'll be sleeping through the hottest part of the afternoon at some point. A washer and dryer, because salt and sunscreen ruin clothes fast and nobody packs seven shirts for a week. Free parking, if you've rented a car to get yourself to the dock before first light. And a kitchen with coffee and basic spices already in it, which is the difference between a 4:30 a.m. departure that works and one that doesn't: no café in Costa Rica is open when a charter boat wants you aboard.

After the boat comes in, the tropical pool and the shady gazebo at Zenergy do the rest. There's a bicycle on site, a garden, a patio, and a full kitchen you can cook in if the mate sends you home with dorado fillets. The guest rooms share that kitchen, which suits people who've just spent nine hours on a boat with strangers and don't mind a bit of company over a beer.

Where the boats leave from, and why it shapes your choice

Most offshore charters in this part of the Central Pacific leave from Los Sueños Marina in Playa Herradura, with a few operators launching off Herradura Beach itself, just north of the marina. The fishing grounds sit out on the drop-off, roughly twenty-five miles offshore. Sailfish run from December through April, marlin from May into October, tuna most of the year, dorado from September into January. Closer in, along the rocks, roosterfish come on from about May to November alongside snapper and jack.

Jacó and Herradura sit a short hop apart on the same coast road: a taxi does it in well under twenty minutes, and the hourly local bus takes about twenty for a dollar, running from early morning until mid-evening. San José's airport is around an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters away on Route 27. None of that is far, but a pre-dawn departure means driving yourself or arranging a pickup the night before, which is worth settling when you book the boat rather than the night before you fish.

If the one-bedroom rooms are taken, or you're bringing more people

Garabito is where most of our Costa Rica inventory sits, so there's room to move up a size without changing neighbourhood or host.

  • Condo Jadura — two bedrooms, sleeps five, on the sixth floor of the Viva Jacó tower, overlooking the pool deck with the rainforest mountains behind. Pet-friendly, with a gym and a game room in the building. Good if two couples are splitting a boat.
  • Condo Brisa — three bedrooms, sleeps six, in the quieter northern end of Jacó in the same complex. Scarlet macaws turn up in the trees outside with some regularity. Two bathrooms, which is the real argument for it over Jadura when six of you are getting ready at the same hour.
  • Zenergy Casa & Cabinas — the whole property, six bedrooms across the main house and three guest cabinas, sleeping thirteen, with the large pool to yourselves and an onsite team. This is the one for a tournament week or a group chartering a boat for several days running.
  • Zen Den and Rose Room — the two main-house rooms taken together, sleeping four, with the bathroom shared only between the pair of you. Each room locks and has its own entrance within the house, which works well for two couples who want privacy without separate buildings.

The one-bedroom question, side by side

  • Zen Den — 1 bedroom, sleeps 2. Full bed, writing desk, reading nook. Bathroom shared with Rose Room. Community pool, garden, patio, free parking, kitchen, Wi-Fi, A/C, washer and dryer.
  • Sunflower Suite — 1 bedroom, sleeps 2. King bed and a private ensuite. Patio, garden, free parking, dedicated workspace.
  • Rose Room — 1 bedroom, sleeps 2. Double matrimonial bed, reading nook, well-lit desk. Patio, garden, free parking.
  • Cabina Plumeria — 1 bedroom, sleeps 3. Queen plus a day-bed, its own patio and balcony. The pick if you want a separate building rather than a room in the house.

Book direct, and ask us the awkward questions first

We host and manage these homes ourselves, so the person answering your message is the person who knows whether the Zen Den bathroom arrangement will bother you, and can tell you what's actually free on your dates. Reach us by app, text, email or phone. Booking direct means no platform fees sitting on top of the nightly rate, which on a week-long trip is money better spent on a boat.

A few things to confirm with us rather than assume: current rates and minimum stays for your dates, the pet policy for the specific room you want, and check-in timing if your flight lands late or your first charter leaves early. Tell us you're fishing when you enquire, and we'll work out the arrival logistics with you.
