Where to sleep before a Los Sueños fishing day

Sportfishing boats moored at Los Sueños Marina in Herradura Bay, Puntarenas, under morning cloud

If you're booking a charter out of Herradura Bay and you only need a bed for two, look at three one-bedroom stays we manage in Playa Herradura: Cabina Plumeria, Cabina Bamboo and the Zen Den. All three sit on the same shared property in Playa Herradura, which is the village wrapped around the bay the boats leave from. Garabito is the canton these beaches belong to, so a search for Garabito, Puntarenas is really a search for Jacó, Herradura and the coast between them.

That geography is the whole point for an angler. Boats run out of Herradura Bay in front of Los Sueños Marina, and Jacó town centre is roughly ten to fifteen minutes down the coast road from there, depending on traffic. Staying in Herradura means your pre-dawn drive to the dock is short and the drive back, sunburnt and salt-crusted, is shorter still.

The six one-bedrooms, and what separates them

They are close cousins, not clones. Each sleeps two, each has air conditioning, a kitchen with a stove and oven, free parking, Wi-Fi and a desk, and each opens onto the garden and the shared pool. The differences are small and they decide things.

  • Cabina Bamboo is the one listed as a cabin: a studio of its own, with a patio, a TV and kitchenette. If you want your own four walls and a door that closes on the rest of the property, this is it.

  • Cabina Hibiscus is the other freestanding cabina, same footprint of comforts, a patio, with a kitchenette, simple coffee maker, mircrowave and mini fridge.

  • The Zen Den sits inside the main house rather than out in the garden. A full matrimonial bed, a writing desk, a reading nook, and a bathroom shared with the Rose Room next door. The kitchen is the house kitchen, shared. It's the most sociable compared to the cabinas.

  • The Rose Room sits inside the main house rather than out in the garden. A full matrimonial bed, a writing desk, a reading nook, and a bathroom shared with the Zen Den next door. The kitchen is the house kitchen, shared. It's just a sociable.

  • The Sunflower Suite sits inside the main house on the second floor rather than out in the garden. A KING bed, a writing desk, a reading nook, and a ensuite bathroom. The kitchen is the house kitchen, shared.

What fishing days actually do to a rental

A charter day starts in the dark and ends with wet clothes. Two things on these listings earn their keep because of that: the washer and dryer, and the kitchen. You will go through shirts fast in Herradura humidity, and having laundry in your own unit rather than hunting for a service changes a week-long trip. The coffee maker matters for the same unglamorous reason, since the boats leave long before most kitchens in town are awake.

The other thing anglers underestimate is the afternoon. Offshore days finish earlier than you expect, and the pool is where everyone ends up. On this property it's a large one, set in the landscaping, with a gazebo for shade. Nobody who has spent eight hours on the Central Pacific drop-off wants a second excursion at four in the afternoon.

Cooking your catch, and what's around

Each has access to a communal barbecue area. The grounds also keep bicycles, which is a reasonable way to move around a village the size of Herradura.

What's within reach: Los Sueños Marina sits inside Herradura Bay, with the country's largest charter fleet and the Triple Crown tournament series that has run there for two decades. Pez Vela Marina down in Quepos is the other tournament-minded option on this coast if you want to compare fleets. Jacó, a short run down the road, is where the restaurants, bars, shops and casinos are. Playa Jacó itself is the surf beach; Herradura is the calmer bay.

Picking between them

For a couple on a fishing week, we'd point you at Cabina Bamboo first. You get a self-contained studio with its own kitchenette, so a five o'clock departure doesn't involve negotiating a shared counter with the rest of the house, and the patio is somewhere to sit at the end of the day. Cabina Hibiscus and Plumeria are equivalent choice.

The Zen Den, Rose Room, and Sunflower Suite, suits a different trip. They're smaller and sit inside the main house. If you're out on the water most of the day and the room is purely somewhere to sleep, the trade works well and you'll meet the other guests around the pool whether you intended to or not. If the two of you want a private kitchenette and a private bathroom, take one of the cabinas or The Sunflower Suite.

If the group grows between now and the trip

Fishing parties have a habit of doubling. Three more friends decide they're in, or the non-fishing half of the family comes along, and suddenly one bedroom is one bedroom too few. The good news is that everything above sits on the same property, so you can scale without moving.

Cabina Plumeria and Cabina Bamboo together give you two bedrooms and room for five, which handles a pair of couples or a couple plus kids. The Zen Den and Rose Room combine into two bedrooms for four inside the main house, with a lock on each bedroom door and the bathroom shared only between those two rooms. And if the whole crew books one boat, Zenergy Casa & Cabinas is the full property: the three-bedroom main house plus the three guest cabinas, sleeping thirteen across six bedrooms and five bathrooms, with the pool and the onsite team included. For a group that wants to eat together, spread out and leave for the dock in one convoy, it's the one to beat on this coast.

Cabina Plumeria is worth a separate look if there are three of you: a queen bed plus a day-bed in a one-bedroom cabina, which is a useful shape for a couple who want lounging space as much as a third mattress.

Before you book

A few things are worth settling with us directly rather than assuming, because they vary by unit and by date:

  • Pets. We list pet-friendly options across the portfolio, but confirm the current policy for the specific unit you want before you commit.

  • Charters. Our onsite team in Herradura will help you plan and book excursions, including fishing days, but the boat is a separate arrangement from the rental. Tell us what you want to target and when, and we'll point you to the right operator.

  • Dates and terms. Rates, minimum stays and availability shift with the season. Message us and we'll confirm in writing.

  • Arrival timing. The drive from the San José airport to this stretch of coast runs along Highway 27 and takes roughly an hour and a half. If your first charter is the morning after you land, plan the flight accordingly.

Book direct with us and there's no platform sitting in the middle of the conversation, which is worth something when you're trying to line up a dawn departure with a check-in time. Pura Vida, and good luck with the sailfish.
