Where two people should stay in Playa Herradura

The horseshoe-shaped bay at Playa Herradura, Costa Rica, with calm water and forested hills behind the beach

For a couple who wants flat water in the morning and nothing much to do in the afternoon, book Cabina Bamboo. It's a studio cabina on the Zenergy grounds in Playa Herradura, it sleeps two, and it has its own kitchen, a patio and the use of the big pool in the garden. If Bamboo is taken, Cabina Hibiscus does the same job with a slightly different character, and the Zen Den is the cheaper way in if you'd rather spend the money on a boat.

That's the short answer. The longer one is about what Herradura actually is, because it isn't Jacó and people arrive expecting it to be.

Why this bay suits the water-sports plan

Herradura sits in a horseshoe, which is the whole point. The hills wrap around the bay and take the worst of the swell out of it, so the water is usually calm enough to swim, to paddle, to get a boat off the sand without a fight. Surfers mostly go elsewhere for the real thing. If you want waves, Jacó is four miles south, ten or twelve minutes by road, and Playa Hermosa is about fifteen minutes past that.

What Herradura has instead is the marina. Safe Harbor Los Sueños handles something like two hundred wet slips, with room for boats from thirty feet up to a hundred and eighty, and that scale is what brings in the sportfishing charters, the yacht rentals, the sunset sails, the snorkelling and diving trips. Parasailing and jet ski excursions run out of this stretch of coast too. You don't need to own anything or know anyone: this is a town organised around people going out on the water for the day and coming back at four.

For a couple, the rhythm writes itself. Out early on the calm water, back for the pool in the heat of the afternoon, and then dinner at the Marina Village. Lanterna does Italian and steaks until ten. Bambu does sushi. Dolce Vita opens for breakfast and makes its gelato daily, which matters more than it should after a day in the sun. Jimmy T's Provisions sells prepared food to take away, and if you've got a kitchen, that's a better Tuesday than another restaurant. El Manglar sits down on the beach itself, five minutes from the marina.

The three one-bedroom options, and how they differ

All three are at Zenergy Casa & Cabinas, a shared property in Playa Herradura with a three-bedroom house, three guest cabinas and a large pool in the middle of the landscaping. Each of the three sleeps two. Each has air conditioning, Wi-Fi, its own bathroom arrangement worth understanding, and free parking. Beyond that they're genuinely different stays.

Cabina Bamboo is a studio of about 240 square feet with its own full kitchen, a patio and a balcony, and it has the strongest track record of the three: more than a hundred guests have reviewed it, averaging a shade under ten. Pets are allowed. There are bicycles and board games on site. For two people who want to be self-contained, cook breakfast in their own space and not negotiate with anyone, this is the one I'd put a couple in first.

Cabina Hibiscus is a little smaller, around 192 square feet, with the same private kitchen, patio, balcony and garden setting, and a shelf of books that tells you what kind of afternoon the owners had in mind. It's also pet-friendly. The practical difference between Hibiscus and Bamboo is floor space and nothing more consequential than that, so if your dates only work for one, take the one that's free.

Zen Den is a different proposition. It's a room inside the main house, roughly 140 square feet, with a full matrimonial bed, a writing desk and a reading nook, and the bathroom is shared with the Rose Room next door. The kitchen is the shared house kitchen, fully equipped, and you'll meet other guests at the pool and under the gazebo. Seventy-odd reviews and a near-perfect average say people like it a great deal. It suits a couple who treats the room as somewhere to sleep between a fishing charter and a late dinner, and who doesn't mind company. It doesn't suit anyone who wants a door that closes on the whole world. Zen Den doesn't take pets.

What you get at the house itself

The pool is the centre of the property, and it's shared: a community pool, not a private plunge off your patio. On a trip built around salt water that reads as a feature rather than a compromise, because the thing you want at two in the afternoon is fresh water and shade, and the garden gives you both.

Two amenities decide more than they look like they should. The washer and dryer, because boardshorts, rash vests and a towel that has been wet since Monday pile up fast on a water-sports week, and a seven-night trip with laundry on site packs like a four-night one. And the kitchen, because the marina restaurants are good and you will not want them every night. Both Bamboo and Hibiscus come with their own, down to the spices and a toaster.

There are bicycles available at the property, which is the other thing worth knowing. Herradura is small and flat along the shore, and a bike is a better way to get between the house, the beach and the marina than starting the car.

If you're playing golf, or if the two of you are really four

Herradura's golf is one of the reasons people pick it over Jacó, and Bamboo and the Zen Den both list golf course access among their amenities, so confirm the details with us when you book and we'll point you at the right tee times.

Two adjustments come up often enough to mention. If you want more lounging room than a studio gives you, Cabina Plumeria is a one-bedroom cabina with a queen bed plus a day-bed, sleeping three. And Sunflower Suite is a room for two with a king bed and a private ensuite decorated with custom Costa Rican art, which is the answer for a couple who likes the Zen Den's position in the house but wants their own bathroom.

Travelling as two couples? Zen Den and Rose Room books the pair of main-house bedrooms together, each with a lock on the door and room-darkening shades, sharing one bathroom between just the two of you. And when the trip grows into a proper group, Zenergy Casa & Cabinas takes the whole place: the three-bedroom house plus the cabinas, thirteen people, five bathrooms, and the pool to yourselves.

Getting there, and when to ask us things

From San José, allow somewhere between an hour and a quarter and an hour and a half on Route 27, depending on traffic and how long you spend at the toll plazas. Once you're in Herradura you're ten minutes from Jacó's shops and nightlife, and buses run that route hourly from early morning until about ten at night, which matters if you want a second glass of wine at dinner. Carara National Park, with its rainforest and its scarlet macaws, is about twenty-five minutes north on Route 34. Manuel Antonio is the longer day, a bit over an hour south past Quepos.

There's an onsite management team at Zenergy, which changes the texture of a stay more than any amenity list does. They'll book your excursions, tell you where to eat tonight, and sort out the thing that goes wrong at six on a Sunday. We host and manage these stays ourselves and take bookings direct, so the person answering your message about a fishing charter is the same person who holds the keys. Message us before you travel with your dates and what you want to do on the water, and we'll have the answer waiting when you land.
