Where two people should stay in Playa Herradura

The calm water and dark sand curve of Playa Herradura on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast, with forested hills behind the beach

If you want one bedroom for two people in Playa Herradura, the short answer is Cabina Bamboo, Cabina Hibiscus, Sunflower Suite, Cabina Plumeria, or the Zen Den. All five sit on the same shared property, Zenergy Casa & Cabinas, a short drive from Herradura's beach and from Jacó, and each sleeps two (Plumeria sleeps three). They are not interchangeable. The differences between them are small on paper and decide the whole trip in practice: who has their own bathroom, who can bring a dog, who gets a balcony, and whether you want to be in a freestanding cabina or in a room inside the main house.

Herradura itself rewards this scale of stay. The bay is calmer than Jacó's, the sand is darker and cinnamon-coloured, and the beach is lined with seafood places. Jacó sits a few miles south, ten to twenty minutes depending on traffic and whether you drive or take the hourly bus. Los Sueños, with its marina, golf course and Marina Village shops, is the other local landmark.

Cabina Bamboo and Cabina Hibiscus: your own four walls

These two are the freestanding cabinas, and they're where I'd point most couples. You walk out your own door into the garden rather than through someone else's living room. Both have a full kitchen with a stove, an oven and a coffee maker, air conditioning, a patio and a balcony, a washer and dryer, free parking, and the shared pool a few steps away.

Cabina Bamboo is the studio, and the most reviewed unit on the property by a wide margin: well over a hundred guests have rated it, with scores sitting just under a perfect ten. Board games live in the cabina, which matters more than it sounds in a place where afternoon rain is part of the deal.

Cabina Hibiscus is the gentler, more domestic of the two: there are books on the shelf, children's dinnerware in the cupboard, and a crib available. It's the one I'd put a couple travelling with a baby in, or anyone who wants to read through a wet afternoon with the fan on.

If you're bringing the dog

Cabina Bamboo and Cabina Hibiscus both accept pets. The Zen Den does not. That single line settles the choice for a lot of people reading this, and it's worth confirming the current policy and any restrictions with us when you enquire, because the answer is per unit rather than per property.

Pet owners get a second advantage from the cabinas without asking for it: a private entrance, a garden, and a patio of your own means a dog isn't negotiating a shared hallway every time it needs to go out.

The Zen Den, and the one thing to know before you book it

The Zen Den is a room inside the main house, not a cabina. It has a full (matrimonial) bed, a writing desk, a reading nook, air conditioning and room-darkening shades, and the bathroom is shared with the Rose Room next door. The kitchen is the shared house kitchen. Over seventy guests have reviewed it and the rating sits a shade under ten, so the arrangement clearly works for the people who choose it knowingly.

Choose it if you treat the room as somewhere to sleep and want the pool deck, the gazebo and the other guests as your living room. Skip it if the phrase "shared bathroom" made you flinch. There's no wrong answer, only a wrong surprise.

Working from here

Every one-bedroom unit on this property has Wi-Fi and a dedicated workspace, which is unusual at this size: the Zen Den's desk is built into the room, and Cabina Bamboo and Cabina Hibiscus each have their own. Mountain views out of all of them, and bicycles on the property for when the screen closes.

For a working stay of more than a few days, the cabinas pull ahead for a reason that has nothing to do with the desk. Your own kitchen means breakfast on your own schedule, and a washer and dryer in your own unit means you can pack for a week and stay a month. That's the practical difference between a holiday room and a place you can live in.

Two more one-bedrooms worth knowing about

  • Sunflower Suite sleeps two and has a king bed with a private ensuite bathroom, decorated with custom Costa Rican art. It's a room in the main house like the Zen Den, but the bathroom is yours alone, which is the compromise a lot of couples are actually looking for.
  • Cabina Plumeria sleeps three: a queen bed plus a day-bed, with a patio, balcony and garden. Book it if you want somewhere to sprawl during the day rather than because you need the third sleeping spot.

One thing not to be confused by when you're searching: Zen Den and Rose Room is a two-bedroom booking of both main-house rooms together, sleeping four and sharing one bathroom between them, and Zenergy Casa & Cabinas is the whole property, six bedrooms and thirteen guests. Neither is a one-bedroom reservation, though both tell you something useful: if you're arriving with friends, the same gate, the same pool and the same onsite team can absorb all of you.

Picking one, and then booking it

  • A dog, or a door that's only yours: Cabina Bamboo or Cabina Hibiscus.
  • A baby in tow: Cabina Hibiscus, for the crib and the children's dinnerware.
  • A king bed and a bathroom to yourself, inside the house: Sunflower Suite.
  • Room to lounge for a couple: Cabina Plumeria, day-bed included.
  • A simple base, sociable pool deck, shared bathroom: the Zen Den.

Everything here is hosted and managed by us rather than handed off, and there's an onsite team at Zenergy who'll help you sort out an excursion or point you at the right place to eat. You can book direct through the site, and if you want to check a date, a pet policy or a minimum stay first, message us by app, text, email or phone and we'll answer rather than send you to a form.
