One-bedroom stays in Garabito for birders

Scarlet macaws flying over rainforest-covered mountains above Jacó in Garabito, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

If you want one bedroom, two people, and a base in Garabito for birding days, start with the Zen Den. It's a one-bedroom room inside the main house at Zenergy Casa & Cabinas, it sleeps two, and it has the things that matter when you're out of the door before the heat: free parking so the rental car is right there, air conditioning for the middle of the day, a patio and garden to sit in, and a kitchen in the house for the coffee you'll want at an unsociable hour. If it's booked for your dates, the Rose Room and the Sunflower Suite sit in the same house, each a one-bedroom for two, and the Sunflower has its own ensuite bathroom finished with Costa Rican art. The Cabina Plumeria is a separate one-bedroom cabina with a queen and a day-bed, sleeping three.

That's the short answer. The longer one is about where you point the car.

Why a Jacó-side base works for Carara

Carara National Park is the reason most birders come to this canton, and it earns it: around 4,700 hectares holding roughly half of Costa Rica's bird species, with scarlet macaws moving between the forest and the coast. From Jacó you head north on Route 34 and you're at the park entrance in something like twenty to twenty-five minutes, which means a six o'clock start from your own kitchen rather than a pre-dawn transfer.

The other half of the day is the Río Tárcoles. Boat operators run out of Tárcoles village into the Guacalillo mangrove channels for crocodiles, iguanas, herons and macaws, and the Crocodile Man Tour has been doing it from a base a hundred metres south of the Catholic church in Tárcoles for years. VicTours runs guided outings at Carara, the river and Bijagual, including a dedicated birdwatching tour at Carara of three to four hours. Book a guide; the difference between a guided and an unguided morning at Carara is roughly the difference between forty species and a hundred.

What the Zen Den is, and what it isn't

It's a room, not a house. The Zen Den sits within the main house at Zenergy Casa & Cabinas: a full matrimonial bed, a writing desk, a reading nook, and a bathroom shared with the Rose Room next door. The kitchen is the house kitchen, fully equipped, which is fine if you're a couple who want a stove and a fridge rather than a private domain. Outside there's a pool area under tropical planting and a shaded gazebo, and an onsite team who are there when you arrive.

For birders, three of its listed amenities quietly do real work. The washer and dryer, because you will sweat through a shirt by nine and you do not want seven of them in a suitcase. The bicycle, for the flat run to the beach when you've had enough of the car. And the dedicated workspace with Wi-Fi, which is where your photographs get backed up and tomorrow's list gets written. The mountain view is the one that makes people stop packing and stand still for a moment.

Guests have rated it highly across a long run of reviews, which for a room inside a shared house tells you the house is run properly.

If you'd rather have four walls to yourselves

Two people don't need two bedrooms, but plenty of couples want the kitchen, the sofa and the terrace to be theirs alone. In that case look at the condos at Viva Jacó rather than another single room.

Condo Jadura is a two-bedroom on the sixth floor with views straight at the rainforest-covered mountains, which is a pleasant thing to eat breakfast in front of before you drive into them. It sleeps five, it's steps from Jacó Beach and the restaurants along the strip, and it allows pets. For a couple travelling with a dog, that last fact is the one that decides it, and the building has a dog park.

Condo Brisa is a three-bedroom sleeping six in the quieter northern end of Jacó, about a five-minute walk from the sand, and the owner's own description names scarlet macaws over the mountain view as a regular event. Two bathrooms instead of one, and no pets here, so the dog decides between these two more than the floor plan does.

Neither is a one-bedroom, and I'd not pretend otherwise. They're what you book when the extra room is worth the extra rate to you.

The four things to settle before you book

A birding trip has a different checklist from a beach week. Message us with your dates and we'll confirm these rather than leaving you to guess:

  • Dates and the full price. Availability on the one-bedroom rooms moves fast in high season, and we'll give you the total with taxes and fees before you commit.
  • The bed and the bathroom. Which bed you're getting, and whether the bathroom is shared or ensuite for the room you've chosen. The Sunflower Suite's is ensuite; the Zen Den's is shared with the Rose Room.
  • Pets. Condo Jadura takes them. If you want a pet in one of the Zenergy rooms, ask us first and we'll tell you straight away.
  • Check-in and early starts. Tell us you're leaving at half five for Carara and we'll make sure arrival and keys are arranged around it.

Book it direct

We manage these homes ourselves, in Garabito and up in the Arizona pines, and you can book them here without a platform sitting in the middle taking a cut. Tell us how many of you there are, whether a dog is coming, and which mornings you want to be at Carara. We'll point you at the right room and, if the one you wanted is gone, at the one next door.
